In December 2001, legislation was introduced to include private sector organizations in the practice of protecting the privacy of individuals. The amended legislation set up the National Privacy Principals (NPP). These principals detail how private organisations should collect, use, secure and disclose personal information; give individuals the right to know what information the organisation holds on them and the right to correct that information if it is inaccurate.
